MONITORING OF SURFACE WIND OVER THE JAPAN/EAST SEA AND ADJACENT LAND Wind monitoring is based on the special NCEP/NCAR product, Ancillary Data for the SeaWiFS Project. It is 1x1-gridded dataset for few meteorological variables (sea level pressure, surface zonal/meridional wind, relative humidity, and ozone), freely available from the Internet: ftp://oceans.gsfc.nasa.gov/METOZ/ 6h surface zonal/meridional wind for 1998-2006 is visualized as 1°x1°-gridded vectors (m/s) in the area of 34°-53°N, 127°-143°E. They are similarly scaled for all charts, with the longest vector of 25 m/s shown in the left top corner. Wind speed contours are shown every 2 m/s and hatched downhill. Contours of 2 and 4 m/s are shown in dashed lines. Contours of 10 and 20 m/s are shown in thick lines. Standard Reanalysis 2.5°x2.5°-gridded products are discussed in: Kalnay, E., M. Kanamitsu, R. Kistler, W. Collins, D. Deaven, L. Gandin, M. Iredell, S. Saha, G. White, J. Woollen, Y. Zhu, M. Chelliah, W. Ebisuzaki, W. Higgins, J. Janowiak, K. C. Mo, C. Ropelewski, J. Wang, A. Leetmaa, R.
